Protecting our air, land, and water, securing our future

Whether it's our national parks or our coasts, people expect their government to protect nature, for them and for future generations.

The Liberal government must put in place a comprehensive strategy and action plan, informed by science, Indigenous peoples and supported by a whole-of-government approach to restore nature.

Since being elected in 2015, the Liberals have been consulting and talking about the protection of the environment and waters. Yet, without action, their discussions seem to be just for show and not for actual change.

The NDP is working nationally to reduce emissions from shipping and fishing, expanding marine protected areas, reducing key threats to ocean ecosystems, and implementing a national water strategy.

Conservation is an essential means of protecting ecosystems and preserving biodiversity. We are committed to protecting at least 30% of our land, freshwater and oceans by 2030 and to supporting these protections through funding and enforcement to achieve this goal.

New Democrats will continue to fight for the protection of our natural environment, starting with enshrining the right to a healthy environment in a Canadian Environmental Bill of Rights, so that all communities can be guaranteed clean water, land and air.

Canada's water resources are critical to the health and well-being of our ecosystems, communities and local economies. That's why we want to implement a national freshwater strategy and work with the provinces and territories to protect our waterways.

The protection of the St. Lawrence is also at the heart of our priorities. After months of work, a bill to give legal status to the St. Lawrence River has finally been tabled in the House of Commons, a work of which we are very proud.
