Health Canada's most recent foray into unnecessary and overbearing regulation of the NHP sector.
We know that the vast majority of Canadians routinely use Natural health products (NHP), and that they are safe and effective for the uses for which they are intended.
Natural remedies have a long history of use in Canada as a low-risk and affordable method of promoting well-being. They must remain accessible to all Canadians.
At the same time, Canada’s New Democrats believe that consumers have a right to know that the natural health products they rely on are both safe and appropriately labelled. We also understand the importance of the natural health products industry to Canada’s economy and the thousands of jobs it supports.
While Health Canada's stated goal is to promote access to safe and effective natural health products for consumers, it remains to be seen how the department’s proposals will accomplish this goal given their potential unintended consequences.
