For A Guaranteed Livable Basic Income
The pandemic has shown us how fragile our social safety net is. Some people have lost their jobs, others have lost their homes.
The government has put in place emergency measures, including the Canada emergency response benefit. Without these measures, many people would have found themselves without means to pay their bills or rent.
The NDP wants to work with the federal government and work with provincial, territorial and indigenous governments to ensure that a guaranteed subsistence income is adopted that would complement existing social programs.
This would be a concerted effort to eradicate poverty and ensure the respect, dignity and security of all persons in accordance with Canada’s domestic and international legal obligations.
