We collectively waste tons of plastic. In Canada, we throw out almost 3 billion plastic bags every year. A big chunk of that plastic ends up in our oceans, lakes and rivers.
Each year, plastics kills over a million sea birds and 100,000 marine animals such as turtles, whales, dolphins and seals.
Knowing this, Canada should be a world leader in the fight against plastic pollution by passing laws that limit the use of microplastics, plastic bags, and single-use plastics such as straws and bottles.
NDP MP Gord Johns has put forward a motion (click here to learn more) to tackle this issue. This motion urges the canadian government to develop a strategy to combat plastic pollution and protect our oceans.
